Irony or Fate?

This kind of thing fascinates me:

Bay Area native Daniel Berk had planned to spend the Christmas holiday in Sri Lanka, getting his scuba certificate, but canceled his plans at the last minute. He missed the deadly tsunami, but on Saturday, he was killed in an avalanche while snowboarding off-trail in the Austrian Alps.

I suppose most people would call this ironic, and so would I. Most people would shake their heads and go on with their day. But I confess, when I see stories like this, my mind goes off into directions it has no business going.

Daniel didn't go to Sri Lanka because his girlfriend wanted to go elsewhere. If it were not for her, would Daniel have died in Sri Lanka? Maybe, maybe not. Could it be that she got in the way of fate once, and the powers that be compensated for that?

I'm not saying that the avalanche happened just to get Daniel, because he escaped the tsunami. Still, when all is said and done, the tsunami is really nothing but water and so is snow.

I don't believe in coincidence. Everything happens for a reason, I believe that, I do.
