Deliberations Begin

UPDATE: GUILTY!!!!

Akbar has been convicted by a military jury of premeditated murder and attempted murder in a grenade and rifle attack that killed two of his comrades and wounded 14 others. He now faces a possible death penalty, which the 15-member jury will consider at a hearing that begins Monday.

He may be muslim, but he ain't crazy.

FACT: Hasan Akbar is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder for the deaths of two officers and wounding of 14 others in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at the start of the Iraq war.

FACT: Akbar wrote in his diary that once he was sent to Iraq, "I am going to try and kill as many of them as possible."

FACT: Akbar intended to kill officers in his brigade's leadership, including the brigade commander.

FACT: Before launching the attack, Akbar turned off a generator that plunged the outside area of the officers' camp into darkness.

FACT: Akbar then threw an incendiary grenade into the brigade commander's tent, knowing it would make the three men inside stand up and be vulnerable to shrapnel from a fragmentation grenade.

FACT: At the next tent, occupied by majors, Akbar yelled "We're under attack" so the soldiers inside would stand up, making them better shrapnel targets as well.

FACT: Akbar repeated the procedure at a tent occupied by captains and lieutenants, and waited outside for a target he could hit with rifle fire.

FACT: Akbar planned to do murder, as evidenced by his own words in his diary, and there was a sustained period of contemplation in connection with the murders.

FACT: Akbar is guilty of high treason and murder in the first degree.

FACT: Akbar murdered Army Capt. Christopher Seifert.

FACT: Akbar murdered Air Force Maj. Gregory Stone.

FACT: Akbar attempted to murder at least 14 additional soldiers, all of whom were injured in the attack.

Akbar's trial is essentially over, the jury has begun deliberations.

Godspeed Jurors, may you come to a swift, just decision and impose the maximum penalty allowable:

Anything less is an insult to the memory of those brave and honorable men and women of the United States Military.

I'm all for a public execution by hanging for this animal. The only thing better would have been a field court marshal and execution.
