Duck and Cover

Mac over at Beast Media turns back the clock to a time of innocence, when Americans believed they could somehow survive a nuclear attack on our country, to a time when children and adults practiced "Duck and Cover" for safety, coached by Burt the Turtle.

I got a little teary-eyed watching it, watching children dive under their school desks, dive into doorways and dive off their bikes to curl up against the curb. Oh, the innocence of believing that "Duck and Cover" could help you survive a nuclear bomb!

Yet, at the same, they all had the jaded acceptance and recognition of the very real threat to our country, and our lives.

How times have changed. Today, we know that Duck and Cover ain't gonna work and if the bomb comes, you put your head between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye. Today, our enemies are not the commies across the pond, our enemies are the followers of islam, and they are everywhere, even here.

Despite a nuclear Iran chanting death to America, many of us believe that we need not fear one giant blast, but we all know that dirty suitcase bombs are a distinct possibility. And yet, at the same time, there are so many Americans that believe that there is no terrorist threat.

We are not as innocent as we were in the 50s, but G-d help us, we are certainy not as smart either.

You underestimate the value of duck and cover....
at least as compared to "stand there like a shmuck and let the blastwave hit you in the face..."

Every chance of survival, no matter how threadbare, is worth seizing.
