Something... and Half of Something: I love my Mossberg

I love my Mossberg

But this might be a ilttle easier to carry around...

Its a Smith & Wesson, "Scandium alloy frame with a Titanium cylinder" and touted as "the strongest and lightest weight .357 Magnum revolver made." I like the way it looks, but it might be too big and at almost $1,000, its a little pricey. I haven't visited the gun store yet.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Finally, something I can help you with. Look at the 380s

The Walther PK 380 is a nice carry, but the bersa thunder .380 is similar, but quite a bit cheaper. the mustang .380 is smaller, lighter, and has less felt recoil since it's not a blowback design like the other two. they can be a little pricey, and you have to find them used, but, to me, they're worth the effort and $.

A "pricey" fly rod. This I understand. A "pricey" bottle of cognac that you're giving away as a corporate gift. No probs. But a "pricey" carry weapon?

A 20-round box of hollow-points: $37
Lawyer's fees to get a carry permit: $700
Concealed .357: $1,200

The thrilling joy of watching the lights go out of a dirtbag's eyes: Priceless!

Kevin,
"The thrilling joy of watching the lights go out of a dirtbag's eyes: Priceless!"

Egads, man! Statements like that border on psychotic. Self protection is one thing, but getting your jollies from watching another human being die is a bit much, don't you think? Even if the "dirtbag" deserves death, if you are filled with "joy" and are "thrilled" by taking another human being's life, you may be no less deserving of a bullet than the "dirtbag."

Odds are you have never taken another's life. You should talk to people who have. Some may share your sentiment and revel in playing God with other people's lives, but I suspect most have quite a different reaction to taking the life of another.

I think Johnny Cash's "I hung my head" or Poe's "Imp of the Perverse" or "Tell Tale Heart" when I think of the response most people probably have when taking a life.

Perhaps I am making too much out of too little... but the sanctity of life demands it, no? Certainly your Hitlers, your Stalins, your Saddams and Bin Ladens deserve death. I have no problem with death as punishment, but to take joy in the killing bothers me... a lot.

I am thinking of getting the Kel-tec (made in Florida)
http://www.kel-tec.com/p32.html

It is small enough for CC. I wouldn't want to put 100 rounds through it at the range but good enough for CC.

You hurt my feelings Linda. You have gun questions and you don't come to me? Come out to the range over the weekend. I have a couple of things you might like, including the mustang 380 Rene mentioned. Its been a while since we've seen you.

and fabulinus, piss off, eh?

Fabulinus, the thrilling joy is knowing that YOU and yours are alive, and the shithead who meant for you not to be is dead. Yes, there is joy in that moment, and to deny that joy is to deny our humanity, every bit as much as to deny the anguish that he placed you in the position of having to make that choice, your life or his.

Springfield XD45 Compact. Or Sprinfield Armory's new tiny 1911. Both are 9mm, so need some high quality ammo for best effect.

Dear Fabulinus:

Point taken. I should have said something like:

"The thrilling joy of watching a psychotic rapist dirtbag getting off on an insanity plea and laughing at the grieving family as he struts out of court...Typical."

I will exercise more care in the future.

Like you I love my Mossberg, an ATP500. Linda, it doesn't really matter what you choose as long as you can control the piece. I've fired most of the large calibers and semi-auto's, and most are too hard to control. I pack a .45 auto on occaision and a 4" .357 SS Security Six DA, both are formidable but I like the safety features of the DA and the reliable ability to take the tops off beer bottles at 25 yards with full house rounds, Big Al is right, check around and fire a few, use light hand loads to build confidence and accuracy, adrenalin will compensate for the recoil and blast of full house loads if there is ever a need.:)Thanks Big Al.

Perhaps I should make my point more clear. Owning guns is fine. I think all Americans should own guns (except criminals who have used guns to commit crimes). I own guns. Using a gun to defend yourself or your family is fine. Using a gun to protect your property is ok in certain circumstances. I would do the same if put in those situations.

Reveling in the taking of another's life is NOT fine. It isn't ok. Getting a concealed weapons permit in the hopes that you will one day get to kill someone is sick.

Now I am not saying that is your position. I really think you were probably just trying to be clever with a "priceless" joke; however I think you probably ought to be more cognizant of what it is you are saying. Comments like that lead others to think that those who own guns are blood-thirsty nutjobs.

I think I have said more than enough on this issue. I didn't mean to be rude by my observation and I apologize if any were offended. I will now retreat to my corner of the web and leave you fellows be.

Big Al visits Lindasog? Wow, and yes this Palm Beach person knows about Big Al's. What does Big Al recommend for a carry weapon? (I might stop down this weekend and have a look)

Posted by: DoubleU at April 10, 2007 07:16 PM

I have to agree with fab, I would find no joy in ever having to use the weapon in self defense.

Wow. Some great advice here, and some interesting opinions as well.

Thank you everyone.

My husband has that exact gun. He loves it.

He says:
It's light
Easy to conceal
Only has 5 shots
Even though it's a .357 magnum you should not put .357 rounds in it because it's too light
You can shoot .38 calibre +p rounds - use a good bullet like Cor-bon or Federal Hydro-Dot or Speer Gold-Dot. Those work well with this gun. They provide plenty of power and good balistics.

It's a good gun.

Posted by: beth at April 10, 2007 10:15 PM

Oh - he just added that the bullet weight needs to be at least 125 grams.

Posted by: beth at April 10, 2007 10:16 PM

Before you lay out the cash for the scandium model, only to shoot .38+p, consider the model 637 or 640; at less than half the price, you could buy 2! But I guess it comes down to needing the magnum factor, good luck and have fun deciding

DoubleU, you are the bestest!

Dude, what are you doing on April 28?

Bush is going to be here and the moonbats are planning a protest. I'm putting together a counter protest for SoFla PW and I'd love it if you could make it down!

to see what they're up to, check out http://www.a28.org/ and scroll down to the Miami entry.

Hey Linda, it's Vince, right up the road from you, living La Vida Boca ;) Take a look at the Taurus AFS 92- it's basically a Beretta copy, but I think it's actually better in many ways than the original. Very reliable, light, and you'd be able to handle the recoil. Not sure if you want it to carry it fulltime or just keep handy by the nightstand to take down the local Jihadi, but either way, this is a great option.

Posted by: Vince at April 11, 2007 11:26 PM

My experience is limited, but I spent some time at the local range one night testing a few small/lightweight models of .357 handguns just out of curiosity. I found that the lighter ones were harder on my grip/hands. I preferred a heavier model so that I could retain accuracy and control. Just my .02 worth ;-)

Of course, while it's not concealable at all, my favorite for accuracy and sheer fun is my Ruger Security Six .357 magnum. Heh.

I looked at that coupon, there is no information on it, maybe it is only good at that one location?

I don't know Linda about heading down. (I feel like crap today, and am on all sorts of antibiotics) I think I would get too filled with rage with the protesters.
