Et tu Ann?

There I was... merrily surfing my way around my favorite blogs... and out jumps Ann Coulter:

DEUTSCH: ... we should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians, then, or –

COULTER: Yeah.

DEUTSCH: Really?

COULTER: Well, it’s a lot easier. It’s kind of a fast track.

DEUTSCH: Really?

COULTER: Yeah. You have to obey.

DEUTSCH: You can’t possibly believe that.

COULTER: Yes.

DEUTSCH: You can’t possibly — you’re too educated, you can’t — you’re like my friend in –

COULTER: Do you know what Christianity is? We believe your religion, but you have to obey.

DEUTSCH: No, no, no, but I mean –

COULTER: We have the fast-track program.

DEUTSCH: Why don’t I put you with the head of Iran? I mean, come on. You can’t believe that.

COULTER: The head of Iran is not a Christian.

DEUTSCH: No, but in fact, “Let’s wipe Israel” –

COULTER: I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention.

DEUTSCH: “Let’s wipe Israel off the earth.” I mean, what, no Jews?

COULTER: No, we think — we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say.

DEUTSCH: Wow, you didn’t really say that, did you?

COULTER: Yes. That is what Christianity is.

Amazingly, it appears she was trying to make a point about Christian tolerance.

I found that over at IsraellyCool, and he has more. It ain't pretty.

I am not going to toe the party line here. She was not just talking "shock" to sell her books or get attention and she was not misquoted or misunderstood. Ann said what she meant and she meant what she said.

Comments

I Really thought you were pulling our collective leg with a "faux news" story.

She's missing her empathy chip. She has No idea what her "professed" faith is all about. What she's saying is as friggin' unacceptable as any of the spew that issues forth from from the mouths of our Muslim Fundamentalist buddies, except she's not asking "precisely" for your heads.

No, she wants you "Perfected". She is dung. Thanks for raising this Old Testament Christian's ire.

Ps........as I remember, you folkes were here first, and gave us the Foundation of our Faith.
Aaaagh.

Thank goodness you showed up!

I'm horrified to find that Ann is not alone in thinking this way, there are other "Christians" who consider themselves "perfected" and think that wiping out Judaism would be a good thing.

My email is... well... I think I may have lost one or two friends over this. And if you would have asked me yesterday, I would have said those very same people support Jewish people.

sigh.

Lo-o-ong time ago, having read much history along with the OT, NT, Qur'an, selected portions of the Bhagavad Gita, the history and principles of Buddhism, Greek & Norse mythology, Zoroastrianism, A Westerner's Guide to Shinto, and several others, I decided that like the various types of drugs, whiskeys, and politics, you gotta take it in moderation.

Without a li'l bit of iodine in your body, you die. Too much iodine in your body you die. Same goes for salt, cholesterol, carbs, just about anything we intake, including ideas fed to us by persuasive, charismatic crusaders.

Most of the world's major religions sooner or later tend to promote a few basic ideas: take care of old people and children; don't do anything to anybody else that you wouldn't want done to you; avoid getting too hung up on material possessions; live and let live . . . .
Problem is that people can preach that, and even understand it intellectually; they just can't live with it emotionally when it comes to their own lives.

I've found the advice most of our grandfathers gave us all when we were young is still valid: never argue about women, politics, or religion . . . especially with idiots. It just tends to upset the idiot and make you look like one.

My grandmother raised me as a Baptist. Every morning she spoke to her flowers and then to Jesus. I used to ask her, "Mom, when you talk to Jesus, does he ever answer you?"

"Yes, he does, in his own way."

"But I never hear what he says."

"You will, when you're ready. And until then, just tolerate other people's ideas and opinions and do unto them as you'd like them to do unto you."

Kinda hard to beat that, no matter how you were raised.

I'll bet Christopher Hitchens is relieved that he's out of the basement now.

I saw your post this morning Linda, I wanted to find out more information and I had to go to work. She keeps getting worse, I could take her in small doses, but the outrageous for the sake of being outrageous never worked well with me.
According to Little Green Footballs Media Matters is all over it, and I have watched the Ronnie Deutsch show as I was passing by looking for other stuff. What was she doing on that show in the first place?
LGF said she made the comments to sell more books, I don't think it is going to work.

Thank you everyone, for chiming in.

I was feeling mighty low about it, since I saw support for her statement from people I considered friends. I guess Ann did me a favor by exposing those people for what they are. Still, it hurts a little.

And I'm still trying to deal with my Jewish friends who are allowing this to prop up the belief that conservatives don't like Jews and the religious right just wants to convert them.

She writes for the Jewish World Review http://jewishworldreview.com/, maybe I don't understand that website/publication or maybe they haven't responded yet?

(could be legal issues on dropping her)

Posted by: DoubleU at October 11, 2007 08:53 PM

It's not just a matter of what Coutler believes -- I can understand some Christians believing that, although I know other Christians of a fundamentalist bent, who don't believe Jews need to convert to be saved.

It's that her comments were aggressive and taunting. They weren't even done as an attempt to proselytize, which at least would have had a well-meant attempt. They were meant to aggravate. And sell books.

With any luck, though, Ann will have gone a step too far and jumped her shark.

I don't know what they will do DoubleU. The Jewish World Review has a long reach, and I wonder if they will try to distance themselves from her comments. Time will tell.

Posted by: LindaSoG at October 11, 2007 09:07 PM

Well, seeing you here Celtjew, that just makes my day. Its been a long time!

Posted by: LindaSoG at October 11, 2007 09:36 PM

I don't think she was trying to sell books. She is just a mean and vicious person who tries to be as offensive as possible.

Posted by: seawitch at October 11, 2007 10:12 PM

Linda I agree with you and I could care less if a so called " friend or friends" don't get it. I don't want friends like that in my life.

As far as what she said she is way off base and let's imagine if we knew nothing about Ann before today I would say she was anti-semitic with no doubt in my mind. Sometimes it takes awhile for it to show up, not sure why, but if it is there lying in wait, it will show up. Too many times I have heard morons say oh but I have a friend that is a Jew as though it takes away the Jew bashing they did in earlier sentences. Well I am not impressed.

Posted by: Wild Thing at October 12, 2007 02:11 AM

She is honest about it. Most fundamentalist Christians do want Jews to become Christians. It is more of a religious issue than an anti-semitic one in most cases. The problem here is that by talking the "perfected Jew" line, she is making a statement about a religion that is NOT hers, and confusing the two religions as if they were the same. They are actually VERY far apart from each other on many basic concepts. It is this confusion that is often deceptive -- and promoted by those who are totally ignorant of the Jewish faith (and in some cases even their own.) Coulter has convinced me that she is just that.

For a very quick look at how the two religions differ, see http://www.jewsforjudaism.org/jewishpassion/documents/j_compare.html

OK, I clicked on the link at Jews for Judaism and I have to step in here. It's got Christianity wrong.

Calling the Commandments "not eternal or valuable"? The Commandments are in GOD'S HOLY WORD...that makes them both eternal AND valuable. Jesus himself encourages us to "keep the commandments". (Matt. 19:14)

The Land of Israel or Jews "irrelevant"? Wrong. Jesus was a Jew. The remnant in the book of Revelation are Jewish. Jews and Judaism are hardly "irrelevant" to Christians.

I could go down the rest of the list, but here's the thing. Don't go to some website to see how our faiths differ. My best friend is Jewish and we talk about the differences in our faiths all the time...and it seems the more we talk, the more common ground we have. Seek that common ground and not the divisive element.

As far as what Ann said...well, context and timing is everything. What she said is in the New Testament. How she said it is not. She's not exactly Paul the Apostle and methinks she needs to check her mouth at the door sometimes (though she'd certainly be less entertaining if she did).

For the record, Linda...I respect and support your devotion to your faith immensely. It is one of the reasons I come over here. In fact, I gave my Jewish friend "Faith Under Fire" from your recommendation...

Shalom, Linda...

I've been talking about this at several boards. I think Ann's comments to Deutsch are harmless, except to her. They make her look like a buffoon. She was tacky and insensitive. Not unusual for her.

I also think that the ADL is overracting.

That does not change the fact that Ann spoke when she should have shut up. Ann will keep making outrageous statements as long as her fans blindly defend her and enable her and as long as she sells books.

I actually like Ann. I find her to be funny. However, she has made so many irresponsible statements, both spoken and written, over the past 6 years, that if I had a website that was carrying her column, I'd drop her.

I know something was going to happen on CNBC in regards to her, perhaps Deutch was going to discuss it, however it was going to happen between 7-8pm, this post of mine might be too late for people to watch.

I was thinking about this, after 9/11 she said we should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. I admit, I laughed at that, I didn't think it was to be taken too seriously, more along the lines of a "Kick their ass, take their gas" comment. Now I am not sure.

Ann Coulter is expert at saying things to get attention. I've been saying for years that nothing she says is worth paying attention to. She just knows that if she goes on some liberal shows and says something offensive, she'll get weeks of publicity
