They call it a "Love Crusade"

Calling it another "Love Crusade," Reverend Fred Phelps and his minions showed up at the funeral of Cpl. Carrie French to say that God killed her, and will continue killing American soldiers.

"God killed Cpl. Carrie French with an improvised explosive device in retaliation against the United States for a bombing at Phelps' church six years ago." - the not-so Reverend Fred Phelps

Bubblehead reports:

These asshats were out to protest against the funeral of CPL Carrie French in her hometown of Caldwell, Idaho.

At 1252, the blue-shirted protester, probably Phelps' son, shouted at a carload of soldiers turning into the parking lot, "Watch out for IEDs!" After this, he started shouting "French is in Hell" to everyone who passed. On two occasions, he shouted this to young women who appeared to be the right age to be Carrie's classmates. Their mothers had to restrain them; I talked to one who walked by afterwards, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed "Those bastards", and I told her that I'd do my best to tell the world what horrible people these are. The other young woman so accosted just yelled "F*ck you!" back at the protesters; the protesters just laughed.

They were doing a lot of laughing. The old man had about four signs (including "Thank God for 9/11", "Thank God for IEDs", "Fag Troops" and "U.S.A. Sin = 9/11") that he held up in turn; the "son" had an "America is Doomed" sign, and the wife? daughter? had "God Hates Fags" and "Fags Doom Nations".

Tis true that I am just an ignorant Jewish Girl from Brooklyn, but still, I am sure there is a very special place in hell reserved for those like Reverend Phelps, who use the name of God to preach such hatred.

Revered Phelps, I hope you get there soon. The world will be a better place when you do.

What Reverend Phelps is doing is identical to the insane mullahs that preach death and violence. According to my readings of the Bible God is all about love and acceptance, wanting us to be in close fellowship with Him. This blind rage will not be tolerated in Heaven, so why should it be tolerated on Earth?

Reverend Phelps is a domestic terrorist, and he and his minions should be treated as such. I wonder if there are spare rooms in the Guantanamo prison for him?

Linda, I am Carrie's cousin. Let me tell you, if there had not been police protecting those protestors, they wouldn't have stood a chance. There were 800 people at that funeral (myself included), all of whom were there to show their love for Carrie, and to say good-bye. These dumb fucking bastards had no business there.

This isn't about war! This is about Carrie. If you want to protest a war, protest in fucking Washington. Go bitch to Bush, but do not test a greiving family.

I suggest "Reverend" Phelps hide himself. There are at the very LEAST 200 Upshaw/French's out for his blood. One of her cousins said outright, "Well, who wants to go to jail, guys?" after hearing that Phelps would be at the funeral.

I find it outrageous that he told the news that his people would sport "colorful but not gaudy" signs. Their presence at the funeral was both offensive and painful to this family.

To show disrespect to the dead is a most agreivous sin. I hope he burns in Hell.

Dear Levettra:

I am appalled at the actions of this sick man and his hate cult, and I am sure there is a special place in hell for them, I meant that, I did!

The horrible thing they have done takes nothing away from Carrie's memory, please know that I am proud and humbled by her actions, and saddened by your loss. I share your tears.

Thank you so much for visiting my website, and leaving your words there. If there is ever anything I can do for you or your family, please do not hesitate to call upon me.

All my best to you and yours,

'Reverend Phelps'

As a Reverend myself, I can tell you everything this man has put forth is not correct. To hurt the family at the funeral is the act of a Godless man, and to 'preach' the hate he spews, is to make a mockery of most of Christianity. The personal aspect of his hate is a sign of his inability to begin to understand the word of God, or to be taken seriously. This is not a man of faith, but a man of hate, and there is a world of difference between him and any Christian! What he seems to forget is that his hate can generate some measure of recoil back on himself and his followers, and it might be at a very personal level indeed. I could not in good faith call this man a minister, perhaps an instigator, but not a man of God in any true sense of the word. Until the hate leaves his soul, this will be a shallow and bitter man, spewing a sad brand of personal opinion and venom as some sort of ‘faith’. Those who follow him are equally sad, and for them I can only feel pity
